Chapter 14
Present Time…
“Was that your first…” Matt pauses, unsure of how to finish the sentence.
“His name was Ben. I liked him. And, yes, I was tempted. But I never did anything with him. Not while I was married. I never cheated on Peter. But in a sense, Ben was my first. After I spoke with Betty, I called him. He was disappointed it wasn’t going to be me that met him later that night, but he accepted. For weeks, he showered Betty with gifts, money. And it did, in fact, trickle down to me. When it was over, it was over. Betty didn’t care much, because she got what she wanted out of it. Then soon after, I got a call from him again. A friend of his liked black girls. He wondered if Seidi would be interested.”
“As in Seidi Perrelli?” Matt asks.
“Yes. She was married to someone else at the time. Her marriage was rocky at best, so when I made the offer, she jumped on it.”
“Wait a minute. Are we talking about Seidi Perrelli? Eduard Perrelli’s wife?”
“Yes.”
Matt sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose with his thumb and forefinger. “Explain Eduard to me, because I’m thinking you used him to trick me.”
“Oh, that. Well, actually, it was Seidi’s idea. When we discussed the best way to set up your desire. We knew that we needed a way to lure you into following me, but I didn’t want to involve any actual clients. She offered her services. There was a fundraiser going on that week. She picked me up in her husband’s Bentley, knowing that if for whatever reason it was leaked that I was picked up in his car, there would be a provable explanation.”
Looking at me with a raised brow, he shakes his head. “Of course.”
“Matt, don’t do that.” I roll my eyes, sighing.
“Don’t do what?”
“Don’t make me afraid to tell you. If you want to hear the truth, and there’s going to be a lot you don’t like, then you have to accept it.”
“I get that. But cut me a little slack. This is a lot to take in, particularly the parts that have to do with me directly.”
“Yeah, I know,” I say.
“You said your husband never knew that you weren’t a prostitute,” Matt states after a moment.
“He didn’t. The woman he hired to follow me around got the wrong impression. At that point, Ember wasn’t even called that. There was no name. Just contacts. Phone records showed all those calls. We were rookies with no idea that we needed to be careful. Then she got pictures of me going into different apartments. See, I’ve always been the organizer. The hookup.”
“Pimp.”
“Madam. If you must call it something. Pimp is a man. Even the word madam doesn’t fit. I like broker. I arrange contracts between the client and the contractor. Ember is a company. From the time our group began to take shape, we granted”—I make air quotes—“‘desires.’ We wanted to be different. It wasn’t going to be just about the sex.
